June 10, 2021 Ooops I meant to post this like two weeks ago 🤦♀️ Anyway, that was from our concert in Córdoba, Spain with @harpandkanun last month! Shows in all other countries of our European tour got cancelled for the second year in a row (there’s no emoji sad enough to depict how we felt about that
..).
BUT, the good news is, cultural events are finally resuming in France (masked, sitted, seats spaced out) and I will be back with CONCERTS IN MY HOMELAND NEXT WEEK!!
Bordeaux Tuesday 15 June, Baurech Friday 18 June, Carignan Saturday 19 June
COME!! I can’t wait!

April 25, 2021 Harkan is back!! WE ARE TOURING SPAIN NEXT WEEK
Info I haven’t shared this on social media before because we’ve had to overcome so many obstacles to make these concerts happen (no, really. It would take a book…) that frankly until both of us set foot in Madrid today I wasn’t entirely sure it would actually turn out. And announcing things that get cancelled later is no fun. But THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING! We’re incredible excited and hope to maybe see some of your there!
January 22, 2021 A rare sighting in times of pandemic… A stage!
These days just getting to set up on a stage again, even without a live audience, is quite emotional… so here’s a picture of my harp on stage yesterday.
———————————–

November 10, 2020 Just released a new music video!
“Paris Parapluie” it’s a beautiful brand new piece for solo harp written by British composer Paul Lewis. Watch it on YouTube at this ling https://youtu.be/-3zLm-dJDeA or on the “videos” page!
We shot it in Paris before the second round of lockdown with Chloé Mazuel. She caught on camera this moment of pure joy as we set up for the shoot — feeling the sun on my skin, breathing fresh air, walking around the Seine… Things I am day dreaming of right now as we are once again back in lockdown!
I play a gorgeous Minerva Gold Salvi harp courtesy of L’Instrumentarium Paris.

October 26, 2020 Tango Time!
This Tango is the first movement from Carlos Parada’s brand new Latino-American Suite for harp and sax! I should have been on a plane to Colombia this week, where we would have been able to meet up in person and play this together. But with my concerts & trip cancelled, Carlos asked if we could try to record at distance the beginning of the piece. I recorded the harp part from my living room, send it over, and then he surprised me by taking this to a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL, suited up, mixed, mastered and edited this video!! The Suite is a really fun piece, and it has 4 more movements: a Brazilian Bossa Nova, a Cuban Son, a Colombian Joropo and a Dominican Merengue. Let us know if you’d like us to record the rest!

October 24, 2020 Recording in the empty streets of Paris…

August 31, 2020 Grateful to our audience this weekend for being so diligent with sanitary instructions
️
When I look at these pictures some years from now, I hope I remember all the work that went into making this one concert happen, at a time when filling up a venue meant spreading out 80 people in a massive cathedral. I don’t take for granted how lucky we were to live this moment and I hope this will remain my take-away.

May 10, 2020 All dates in Harkan’s 22 May – 7 August 2020 summer tour are cancelled
Given the circumstances, we know that this won’t exactly come as a surprise. But we wanted to tell you that we are postponing our concerts to next summer, so we’ll be back — and you better bet we’ll have new music by then! Our hearts are heavy and we cannot wait to be able to perform again. Most importantly though, we hope you are all safe and taking good care of yourselves!

March 13, 2020 Like many artists, I have spent the past week…
… trying to find ways of somehow making the concerts I had planned in Europe and Asia this month go ahead, from modifying travel itineraries to comply with ever-changing recommendations to downsizing audiences and looking into live streaming options. I am heartbroken that in the end there are just no other options at this point than to cancel all my trips and performances. I will do my best to take this time to record videos and of course I am already hard at work looking into rescheduling options. We had such cool programs planned with wonderful musicians… I can’t wait to share them and for the show to go on at a safer time!! Sending love and well wishes to everyone.

December 5, 2019 Grateful to have been dedicated a brilliant harp solo piece by Paul Lewis
The score was just published by Good Music so now you can get it too ! It’s a 4’30 minutes long harp solo. A fair warning though, it sent me down a serious Paris nostalgia rabbit hole (to which I know no cure but wine) and might induce croissants cravings.
————-

September 28, 2019 My new music video is up and alive! Welcome to 17th century Italy…
This time it’s a trio, by baroque heartthrob and gangsta (no, seriously! He survived assassination attempts, embezzled money from the Vatican and eloped half a dozen times with married noblewomen before meeting an untimely death at the hands of hitmen sent by a senator whose mistress he’d seduced… All the while being one of the most famous composers/musicians of his time and writing over three hundred pieces) — Alessandro Stradella. We are playing the last movement of his “Sinfonia”, a lively Minuet, with Frank Vassallucci on the bassoon and Myriam Darmé on the flute.
Watch the full music video on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/puwiFhNUjTI or on the “videos” page!

September 2, 2019 Playing in duo yesterday for my 16th and last concert of a chamber music heavy summer!

Playing Boieldieu’s Harp Concerto, Debussy’s Dances and a very special arrangement of Carmen’s Habanera that was sure to make the audience dance on their seats with the Caribbean Chamber Orchestra. I didn’t get around to posting this the day after our concert, so I guess it counts as a #fbf now 🤗 Many thanks to the lovely members of the Camerata Caribensis for welcoming me so warmly !

March 18, 2019 Sheherazade – The Other Night, part 2
Premiere of Samir Ferjani’s new opera in Sousse. This time on the electric harp — yes, your eyes are not deceiving you!! Arguably just as much levers-moving than actual notes-producing… (On the electric lever harp, accidentals are played by moving a lever on top of the corresponding string)
——————-

March 15, 2019 The Birth of a New Opera! Premiere of Sheherazade: The Other Night by Samir Ferjani

February 14, 2019 Haaaaave you met Kamel?
(My kamele n’goni that is!) We’re crossing this little desert and coming to you very soon! 🐪
The Kamele n’goni (or kamalengoni) is a modern variation of the traditional six string “Donso n’goni” harp of the hunter societies from the historic Wassoulou (Wasulu) region of Mali, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso. The word “donso” can be translated as “hunting” or “hunter”. For this reason the Donso n’goni are also known as the “hunters harp”. They are ceremonial instruments, used by hunters to accompany traditional chanting and storytelling.
The Kamele n’goni is smaller, tuned a fourth higher, and has more strings (usually ten, twelve or fourteen) than the pentatonic Donso n’goni. “Kamele” can be translated as youth, so the Kamele n’goni is said the be the harp of the new generation, used to play modern arrangements rather than the traditional compositions. It is claimed to have been invented by musician Alata Brulaye around the 1950s-1960s in Mali. It became popular in the region and contributed to the rise of Wassoulou music in the 1970s and 1990s.
The n’goni is known to have existed since at least 1352, when Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveller, reported seeing one in the court of Mansa Musa. The Donso n’goni was also mentioned by Richard Jobson in the 1620s, describing it as the most commonly used instrument in the Gambra (Gambia). He depicted it as an instrument with a great gourd for a belly at the bottom of a long neck with six strings.

December 10, 2018 Flamenco!! (On the harp and qanun…!)
Here is an extract from our Tunisian Live Session in Sidi Bou Said. We are playing Asturias by Albeniz (don’t be fooled by the title that was given to this piece by editors after the death of the composer, musically-speaking it is a pure flamenco!). Full video here https://youtu.be/JxlDv-zGmQA

November 16, 2018 Master harp movers in action. Concert harp and I off to Beirut for a special performance!
I can’t even articulate how relieving it is when for once everything goes smoothly transport-wise and a perfectly fine harp is there on time where it needs to be, handled by reliable people who know what they are doing. Heading into a performance overseas, I often find myself more stressed about the logistics of making sure I’ll have a functional instrument to play on than the playing itself… Can’t help but feel like something’s not right there 🤔 Thank you @duparcdavid and @aliceedde for taking the weight off my shoulders this time!

June 1, 2018 Sultani Yegah Sirto, our first music video as harp and kanun duo Harkan is out on YouTube!
Here’s our first music video as a harp and kanun duo with Mohamed-Amine Kalai : https://youtu.be/gOT8X1yQosg !!
Sultaniyegâh Sirto is one of the master works of Turkish classical music. It was written by renowned Turkish composer and actor Sadi Ișılay (1899-1969). The piece starts with a slow movement in 5/4 rhythm and later converts to a fast 4/4 dance. It is a sirto: a traditional Greek folk dance that was imported into Turkey during the Ottoman period and was popular at the Sultans’ courts. Video shot in the patio of Sidi Abit El Ghariani’s Mausoleum in Kairouan, Tunisia. With special thanks to Kairouan’s National Heritage Institute for allowing us to shoot in this beautiful location.
—————

Zin Ezin is a Tunisian traditional song. Written and first performed by legendary national singer, composer and oud player Hedi Jouini (1909 – 1990), it is one of Tunisia’s best loved melodies. January 18, 2018 We went to the middle of a forest to revisit an Irish melody from the 11th century!
Don’t miss the full music video on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/Qlc5GQHg9HU !! Brian Boru was a High King of Ireland in the 10th and 11th centuries, and founded the O’Brien dynasty. “Brian Boru’s March”, written at the occasion of his funeral, is one of the oldest known Irish melodies. The tune has become a staple of Celtic music.

January 12, 2018 The Skyfall Scores Saga
In 2014, Myriam and I recorded a flute & harp cover of James Bond theme song Skyfall by Adele (it’s on YouTube here: https://youtube/30EhGIy5fu4).
We’ve been trying ever since to get the rights to publish our arrangement. The whole process took over three years and was quite the emotional roller coaster, so we are extremely excited to finally be able to write that OUR SCORE HAS BEEN PUBLISHED!
We actually prepared several versions: the first is for a quatuor of 2 flutes and 2 harps and it is exactly what we play in the video (https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20683944). The second is for flute and harp duet (https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20684176). The third is for alto flute and harp duet (https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20684507) and the fourth is for clarinet and harp duet (https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20684217). Skyfall has always been an audience favorite and we can’t wait to hear it performed by others now that it’s out!!

September 15, 2016 A Bolivian gift to celebrate the end of our musical tale tour
It’s a wrap! After what felt like a million shows for [admittedly very cute] kids in rural schools of France, we performed our last musical tale of the year! To celebrate surviving the intense tour schedule, we had a little Bolivian ‘encore’ jam yesterday night. In this video you can hear us play a short “Taquirari”, an indigenous folk dance.
Taquirari (also spelled Takirari) is a musical tradition developed by the indigenous peoples of eastern Bolivia. The genre is thought to have originated within the Moxo culture (in the current Beni Department) possibly as a form of ritual music to invoke the god of hunting. It expanded beyond its ceremonial setting as a popular form of dance music combining indigenous and Hispanic elements, thus becoming part of the Bolivian creole culture. During the 19th century, the genre spread to the northern regions of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay; many famous taquirari performances and compositions have been done by artists from these regions.
Traditional instrumentation includes handheld drums (bombo, caja) and flutes (quena), as well as the charango, a small creolized guitar considered the national instrument of Bolivia. Taquirari compositions are structured as AABB or AABBCC and their lyrical content is almost always romantic, even though the genre originally lacked vocals and harmony. The music has a duple 2/4 meter and a syncopated rhythm. Taquiraris are pentatonic, which suggests cultural exchange with Andean Folk Music, especially Huayno.

September 14, 2015 Autumn video: Aquaharp by Animusic
Maia Darme performs Aquaharp by Animusic, on a real harp!
Animusic is an American company specializing in the 3D visualization of MIDI-based music. They produced three DVDs of computer-generated music videos featuring self-playing instruments. Aquaharp, written in 1999, is one of their first pieces. In the original Animusic video, an imaginary 26-stringed harp connected to pan flutes, tubular bells, a violin and a cello is played by levitating tear-shaped picks. The harp sits in the middle of a room filled with a foot of water and opened to the night sky. The lighting of the scene changes as underwater lights react to the music and water gently ripples in the background. Music composed by Wayne Lytle for Animusic. Video by Kevin King.

April 5, 2015 A New Electric Harp
In addition to her pedal and lever harps, Maia is now playing a black Camac electric harp. French harp manufacturer Camac built the first solid-body electric harp in the 1980s and this model, launched in 2010, is the latest development of the instrument.
The harp has 32 piezoelectric pick-up microphones, each one placed at the base of a string. Each microphone is mechanically coupled to its string, reacting to the pressure variations induced by the string’s vibrations. This technology is the most effective way to amplify a harp on large, loud stages, enabling clear, consistent tone throughout the entire range of the instrument without problems of feedback or bleed from other instruments. Maia uses effects pedals with her instrument in the same way that electric guitarists would, altering in real time the sound of the harp. Of primarily carbonfibre construction, this harp weighs only 5kg, with a harness which allows Maia to move about while playing.
“I have been performing for a couple of years on a small wooden lever harp turned electro-acoustic. It is great for travelling, it is light and fits in the overhead luggage compartment of airplanes. I really wanted to use effects pedals and play my harp like an electric guitarist would, so I set it up with 3 pick-up microphones inside the soundboard. I also had a strap on it to play standing up on stage, something harpists are not necessarily used to doing. This home-made system worked well and allowed me to perform a variety of styles (pop-rock, experimental, hip-hop…), but my new harp takes it all to the next level. It weights almost the same, I can still strap it on and use effects and looper pedals in the same way than I did before. The difference is that it has more strings (including more basses; I can finally play the bass part!), a much better sound quality, louder signal. Saying farewell to the hassles of trying to amplify the harp when playing next to loud instruments! This harp is a solid-bodied instrument so it produces almost no sound when I’m not plugged in.”

February 23, 2015 Introducing the Antique Erard Harp of the Tunisian National Symphony Orchestra
Maia is currently in Tunisia, putting back into shape the antique pedal harp of the National Symphony Orchestra. It was built more than 100 years ago, in 1908, by none other than the house of Sébastien Erard. Erard is one of the fathers of the “double action” mechanism that allows harpists to change keys and play chromatic alterations. This system of 7 pedals with 3 positions each (flat, natural & sharp), patented in 1810, was met with immediate success and is still used today — albeit with mechanical improvements. Although the house of Erard stopped producing harps in 1959, their instruments are still very much sought after.
This harp was bought by the Orchestre de la Radiodiffusion Française à Tunis in 1948 and had not been played since 1956. It is a Gothic model, named after its richly sculpted golden column. The soundboard is narrow (as was the case for all harps at that period), which means the sound is not as loud as that of modern, wider concert harps. On the other hand, it has a very precise attack and rather defined timbre, especially in the bass. The wood of the harp is relatively well preserved. The mechanism however suffered from the wear of time and needs work.
In Tunisia, Maia is diving into Arab and Berber traditional music and working on transcriptions for her instrument.

December 9, 2013 J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto
The Italian Concerto (“Concerto nach Italienischem Gusto”: Concerto after the Italian taste, or Concerto in the Italian style) is a three-movement concerto for harpsichord solo composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was first published in 1735 as part of the second volume of Bach’s Clavierübung (Keyboard practice), together with the French Overture BWV 831. Both pieces are Bach’s interpretations of popular musical forms of the day.
An Italian concerto relies upon contrasts between the full orchestra and a small group of instruments which act as soloists. Bach imitates this effect on the two-manual harpsichord by using the lower (“forte”) manual on the harpsichord as the “full orchestra” and the upper (“piano”) manual as the “soloists”. The right hand generally takes the role of soloists, with the left accompanying and occasionally adding some more melodic material. In fact, this is one of the few works by Bach which specifically require a 2-manual harpsichord.
Played here is the first movement in F major. Although it lacks a tempo marking, it is always played Allegro (fast). It is composed in ritornello style, meaning a theme particular to the movement returns time and again.
Recorded live in Paris, France, 2013. -
